A youngster finds a cache of letters written by a sixteenth-century conquistador. She reads them and keeps them secret from everyone else. Later, she uses them as inspiration for a fictionalized memoir of a conquistador. The success of the book is boundless, and her publishers pressure her to write another. She does but is criticized for writing only picaresque literature.
